Happy Birthday Coco Chanel!
Today marks the anniversary of what would have been Coco Chanel's birthday.
Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, a fashion icon in her own right, was born in France on the 19th of August 1883. Known for living and breathing fashion, she began work on her Spring Catalog at the age of 87. Sadly, she died in the early year of 1971.
So where did her nickname 'Coco' come from?
Before finding her feet in the fashion industry, Gabrielle showed early aspirations for a stage career. As well as learning to sew, gaining income from being a seamstress, Miss Chanel made her stage-debut singing cabaret to an audience of cavalry officers.
It was then that Gabrielle acquired the nickname 'Coco'.
The rumours behind how still remain blurry - but it was due to one of two things; two popular songs she became unidentified with were called 'Ko Ko Ri Ko' and 'Qui qu'a vu Coco'. The other possibility points towards the meaning of 'cocotte', which denotes the meaning of a kept woman.
Coco created some of the most iconic pieces in the fashion industry: The quilted bag, the little black dress, the 'Chanel suit', the use of jersey fabric and not to mention; sun tans!
This lady is royalty in our eyes.
Happy Birthday Coco!
